It originated in India and was introduced via China to Japan. The Shomyo singing tradition in Japan is succeeded till today without any break. In 752, there was a memorial service of the inauguration of the great Buddha statue at Tôdai-ji Temple in Nara, Japan and Shomyo was sung by hundreds of monks in the ceremony. Each Buddhist sect has its own style of Shomyo singing. The Tendai-shû and Shingon-shû sects became the most musical and important representatives and have a history of about 1200 years. Shomyo is characterized by its extended pitch-bendings, a slow breathing technique and melismatic melody patterns, where time is imagined as a space in which the recited melody patterns are constantly piled up. Shomyo literally means “voice and wisdom” and is regarded as fundamental for all later Japanese music. Le Shômyô est un répertoire de chants bouddhique japonais dans lequel le contrôle et l'expression de la respiration sont pratiqués. Il est originaire de l’Inde et est arrivé au Japon à travers la Chine. La tradition du chant Shomyo au Japon se poursuit jusqu'à aujourd'hui sans interruption. En 752, il y avait un service commémoratif de l'inauguration de la grande statue de Bouddha au temple Tôdai-ji à Nara, au Japon et Shomyo a été chanté par des centaines de moines lors de la cérémonie. Transmis oralement, le style des sectes Tendai-shû et Shingon-shû est actuellement le plus important représentant musical de cette pratique vieille de 1200 ans. Le Shômyô se caractérise par le “pitch-bending”, une technique de respiration lente et des motifs mélodiques mélismatiques. Le temps est conçu comme un espace dans lequel les motifs mélodiques récités sont constamment empilés. En traduction littérale “voix et sagesse”, le shômyô est considéré comme le fondement de tous les courants musicaux japonais ultérieurs.
