The Dresden Philharmonic Children’s Choir is considered one of Germany’s leading children’s choirs. It plays a key role on Dresden’s music scene and as an ambassador to the city both in Germany and abroad. Bearing testimony to this are first prize achievements in numerous national and international contests and concert tours across Germany’s most important music cities and to other countries including Japan, China, Australia, the United States and the United Arab Emirate as well as the African continent. In Dresden, the Children’s Choir is host to the International Children’s Choir Festival. The Philharmonic Children’s Choir performs at choral-symphonic concerts and distinguishes itself with its own concerts. The repertoire stretches from music of the 16th century to contemporary choral works, occasionally commissioned by the choir which it is then the first to perform; likewise forming part of its repertoire are folk songs and crossover music. Numerous CD recordings only serve to confirm the Dresden Children’s Philharmonic Choir’s musical versatility and diverse stylistics. MUSICAL EDUCATION Anyone singing in the Philharmonic Children’s Choir will have experienced a foundational musical education beforehand. The road to the choir takes you from the early education group (from approx. five years) through to the preparatory classes (from approx. seven years) joining the ‘big’ children’s choir at around the age of ten. At present, around 130 children belong to these groups and to the children’s choir. The early education groups and the preparatory classes are where the children acquire the basic tools in the areas of voice training, reading musical notes and choir singing, all of which are a necessary prerequisite to being able to perform in a children’s choir later on.
