Most travelers pass through Meknes, Morocco without stopping, but this historic city holds some of the country’s most impressive landmarks. Once the imperial capital under Sultan Moulay Ismail, Meknes is home to monumental architecture, remarkable history, and one of the most beautiful gates in Africa. In this video we explore Bab Mansour, the grand ceremonial gate that still dominates the city centuries after it was built. We also visit the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, the final resting place of the powerful ruler who transformed Meknes into an imperial capital. Just outside the city lies Volubilis, one of the best preserved Roman archaeological sites in North Africa. With open-air mosaics, ancient streets, and sweeping countryside views, Volubilis offers a rare glimpse into Roman life on the edge of the empire. Often overlooked in favor of Morocco’s more famous destinations, Meknes quietly preserves layers of history that stretch from the Roman world to the Moroccan imperial era. 📍 Locations featured in this video Bab Mansour Gate 35.8895° N, 5.5667° W Moulay Ismail Mausoleum 35.8879° N, 5.5656° W Volubilis Roman Ruins 34.0733° N, 5.5550° W
