Southern Railway’s abandoned Saluda Grade in North Carolina is perhaps one of the most famous mainlines in the world. Exceeding 5% at its steepest point while averaging 4.7% from its base to the top of the grade, Saluda was a tremendous challenge for train crews going back over 100 years. It has been the subject of many documentaries, books, and railfan articles in recent years while also inspiring modelers to build their very own scale versions of the line. Daniel Oswalt of South Carolina has always been fascinated by the history and operations of Saluda Grade for many years and decided to build an HO Scale version of it inside an old Southern Railway steel caboose. In this week’s Time to Model™ video, we’re taking a closer look at Daniel’s Saluda Grade layout, the Southern caboose that houses it, and his favorite ScaleTrains.com models: SD40-2s and SD45s.
