You go to a place like a park, or your yard, and look at birds. You can also bring a field guide - a book that tells you about the species in your area. Your library probably has one you can check out for free. There are also apps that help you identify birds by sight or sound, and many are free. And something like binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens will help you see the birds closely enough to identify them. Some people recommend buying expensive binoculars, but you just want to try the hobby. I found a bunch of used ones for cheap online. Or ask people you know. It turned out my friend had a pair of binoculars I could borrow. If it turns out you like birding, you can buy your own pair later for... $20? Our total cost at this point is zero dollars. You could totally go birding with this setup. It helps to have someone who knows about birds along with you. I brought my coworker Amanda, who is local to this area and knows local species.
