The Shining - Solo Piano Medley

There are many reasons why The Shining stands out as a unique horror movie, from its camerawork to its use of color to its incredibly atmospheric environment. One aspect of the film that adds to the movie's haunting feel is its memorable soundtrack. The main titles in the opening scene feature the melody known as "Dies Irae," an ancient song which dates back to medieval times and has been used--sometimes very subtly--in many other movies, including Alien and The Lion King, to create a sense of dread and foreboding. Later in The Shining, a series of 1930s British dance band recordings can be heard in the background when Jack Torrance wanders into the Gold Room and finds himself suddenly surrounded by ghosts of the past. The way the vintage recordings are treated with heavy reverb makes them dreamlike, causing the whole scene to fill the viewer with the sense the reality is being distorted in a very eerie way. It later inspired a musician operating under the name "The Caretaker" to create his own reverb-soaked recordings of old music, which have been very popular. This medley features an excerpt of the main titles of The Shining, followed by "Masquerade," "Home," "It's All Forgotten Now," and of course the iconic "Midnight With the Stars and You." I had a very difficult time seeing and hearing with the mask on, so please excuse some of the mistakes in my playing. I'll be posting a cleaner recording soon which will have the same kind of deep reverb used in the movie.
