This is the fifth video in the 2025 Renew and Burleigh Church of Christ Lecture Series: Foundations of Christianity. This lecture by Malcolm Lithgow explores the Exodus, the Covenant and the Tabernacle... The book of Exodus tells the foundational story of how God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt and formed them into His covenant people. After hundreds of years in Egypt, the Israelites had grown into a large nation but were brutally oppressed. God heard their cries and acted to bring them out of slavery and into freedom, fulfilling His promises to Abraham. At the centre of Exodus is God Himself. The story is not just about escape from slavery, but about who God is: sovereign, holy, faithful, and present with His people. God raised up Moses, using even evil circumstances for good, and confronted Pharaoh through a dramatic series of plagues. These plagues were not random disasters; they were deliberate acts that exposed the powerlessness of Egypt’s gods and demonstrated that the Lord alone rules creation The climax of Israel’s rescue came at the Passover and the crossing of the Red Sea. Through the blood of the lamb, God spared His people from judgment, and through the waters, He brought them into freedom. These events became central to Israel’s identity and later pointed forward to salvation in Christ After salvation came instruction. At Mount Sinai, God gave His law, revealing how a redeemed people should live. The law was not given to earn freedom but to shape a holy community. This theme continues in the Tabernacle, where God chose to live among His people, right at the centre of their camp, while teaching them reverence, obedience, and grace Exodus ultimately reveals a God who rescues, forgives, and desires to be with His people. It is a story of redemption, presence, and hope that continues to shape biblical faith today.
