Woman gives up everything to help all unwanted animals of Santorini

Santorini is one of the most expensive Greek islands one of the most popular tourist destinations for people around the world. Millions of people visit the island every year, some say more than the islands can actually sustain. Tourism hit Santorini a few decades ago, but as it usually happens in such places, the hoards of visitors and money making didn't help the island or its people evolve really. The antiquated ways of life, and the mentality about animals are still very present. You might not notice it if you visit for a few days, but the island is home to extreme contrasts. On the one hand, there are the luxurious villas and the wealthy tourism, the sailboats and they cruise ships, and on the other hand, there are animals living and working in third world conditions. Christina built this shelter and is fighting on her own, without any help from local authorities - quite the opposite actually. She has devoted her life to SAWA, and the animals she rescues and cares for. She is at the shelter every single day, at six in the morning, cleaning up, medicating, feeding and socializing her animals. Every single day. Between us volunteers, we sometimes call her the Lara Croft of animal welfare, and she is worthy of that title (although to shy to admit it). It was a privilege to have met her.
