In Hinduism, nine is a perfect figure used in multiple practices. The Bhagavata Purana details nine processes of dedicating oneself to the Lord; The Bhagavad Gita stipulates that the human body contains nine gates housing the soul; In Vedic astrology, nine planets make up one’s birthchart. In Nichiren Buddhism, the Nine Consciousnesses characterize the nine levels of a person’s experience of life. In ancient Greek mythology, the Nine Muses rule over art, literature, and science. And, in Dante’s Inferno, hell is made up of nine rings. Even in secular, popular culture, one cannot deny the awesome persistence of the myth that cats have nine lives or the infectious joy that comes with being on cloud nine. If nine, generally, is a number associated with the limits of cycles, bodies, and lives, and the pilgrimages, transitions, and transcendence their ends herald, YSI scores those moments of life and death, emergence and retreat, learning and unlearning, perfection and chaos necessary to a cycle’s fulfillment.
