In the 1800s, as part of a canal building craze triggered by the success of the Erie Canal, the state of Indiana embarked on an ambitious canal project that was never completed and nearly bankrupted the entire state. 200 years later, the small fraction of the canal that was completed has become some of the most interesting parts of the city of Indianapolis.
