(16 Mar 2007) HEADLINE: Lawyers: 3 officers indicted in Bell shooting ---------------------------------------- CAPTION:Lawyers for three New York City police officers say their clients have been indicted in the shooting death of Sean Bell, an unarmed man celebrating his upcoming wedding. Friday's grand jury decision will be announced Monday. (March 16) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] ((FONT: New York)) ((show footage from the night of the shooting)) Three of the five undercover police officers whose 50 bullet barrage killed an unarmed man on his wedding day were indicted Friday. But the exact charges won't be revealed until next week. ((show mug shots of officers charged, including Michael Oliver)) Prosecutors says one of those charged, officer Michael Oliver, on the right, fired 31 times into the car carrying a group of men leaving a bachelor party at a strip club. Officer Marc Cooper, on the left, fired 4 times and the other officer, Gerscard Isnora fired 11 times. Attorneys for the officers say their clients had reasonable suspicions that the men were armed and dangerous, and are looking forward to arguing their case before a jury.. ((SOT- Phil Karasyk, Attorney for officer: THERE IS A LONG WAY TO GO BETWEEN INDICTMENTS AND CONVICTION AT TRIAL. AND, WE'RE CONFIDENT AT THE END OF THE TRIAL, AFTER WE'VE HAD OUR TURN, THAT ALL THESE OFFICERS WILL BE EXONERATED )) The shooting killed Sean Bell, a father of two children who was about to marry Nicole Paultre -- who's now taken his last name. Bell's friends -- Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield were both injured and are still recovering from multiple gun shot wounds. STANDUP: ((FONT: Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press)) Reverend Al Sharpton has been involved in this case since the morning of the shooting last November. As news of the indictments came here, into his Harlem headquarters, Sharpton said he felt no happiness in the indictments." ((FONT: Rev. Al Sharpton)) "if you came for a celebration, that is not what you get, what we have here is some somber reflection. PAGE PEEL "because no matter how humiliated they feel, they will never feel the humiliation of young lady waiting for a wedding and her husband not being there, because he taken in a hail of bullets.
