Boys Over Flowers is a terrible drama

This is a review of the vastly popular Korean drama that aired in 2009. Since its release, Boys Over Flowers has impacted millions of people worldwide. Many consider it to be a modern fairytale, everything what true love should be. Boys Over Flowers is a Cinderella-esque love story between Geum Jan Di (Koo Hye-sun) and Goo Joon Pyo (Lee Min Ho). It is a love story that is meant to inspire people, and to really bring home the message that love is priceless and that it really can conquer all. But it doesn't give that message. In this review , I highlight how Boys Over Flowers isn't a love story at all. Boys Over Flowers can be likened to a how-to guide on Stockholm syndrome. This drama normalizes abusive behavior, especially within a romantic relationship. It ignores a person's right to consent (which should be the foundation of every relationship, whether it be platonic, romantic, or sexual). In short, the message that Boys Over Flowers does give is a simple, but horrifying, one: stay in an abusive relationship with the hope that the other person will change. The chances of that happening in reality, though, are slim to none. Life isn’t a fairytale; you can’t expect that when you kiss a frog that he will magically turn into a prince and that his arrival will bring rainbows and unicorns, and that everything will be magically resolved. This isn’t Disney. This is Reality Inc. All you’ll get from kissing a frog is a mouth full of mucus. Sorry, not sorry. If you liked this review, please like and subscribe.
