Services on this route operate at a 1 train per hour frequency as part of the Edinburgh to Plymouth route with some trains going to or from Penzance, Glasgow Central or Aberdeen and in the summer Newquay. The second XC service from Sheffield to Birmingham which runs in the normal timetable does not stop at Leeds as it goes via Doncaster between Sheffield and York before terminating at Newcastle. As this route is only partially electrified all services are currently diesel operated with local services sharing the route out of Leeds being either EMU or DMU trains. Although Cross Country only operate 1 train each hour on the route from Leeds to Birmingham Northern, TransPennine Express, East Midlands Railway, London North Eastern Railway, Grand Central and West Midlands Railway all share the tracks XC use for parts of the route with the largest shared sections being between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate and from Sheffield to Derby both of which are used by local services as well as other intercity services such as those to London. The Voyagers which operate most services on this route can either be used as single units in either 4 or 5 carriages or in multiple to form 8, 9 or 10 carriage formations. Due to this route providing the fastest services between Leeds and Sheffield and from Derby to Birmingham it is used by both short distance and long distance passengers making it one of the busiest routes on the Cross Country network.
