Aaron Bushnell was a US military member who recently set himself on fire to protest Israel’s actions in Gaza. Self immolation, the act of lighting yourself on fire, is done with the same intention: for someone to willingly sacrifice their life in the name of a cause, to highlight an injustice, to pay the greatest price to demonstrate how far things have gone. In this case, the US had gone too far down a very dark path. This practice goes back farther, with a very public occurrence being the self immolation of Buddhist monk named Thich Quang Duc in 1963. He lit himself on fire to protest anti-Buddhist discrimination from the South Vietnamese government, which at the time, the U.S. was supporting in the Vietnam war. Photographs from this and noteworthy coverage led to it becoming a global story. This sort of radical protest, this willingness to give your life for a cause, has existed throughout protest movements. It was very popularly touched upon in “Revolutionary Suicide” by Huey P Newton, founder of the Black Panther Party. He proposed that there was a difference between revolutionary and reactionary. Reactionary was taking your life in response to circumstances, whereas revolutionary was a willingness to lose your life on the journey to change circumstances.
