Welcome to your Beaufort County News Headlines, I’m Matt Goldin and here are today’s top stories: Rose Hill Litter Gidderz Adopt-A-Highway volunteers will be out Sunday, February 1, from 9 a.m. until noon, picking up roadside litter on Highway 278 from Rose Hill Plantation to St. Gregory the Great in Bluffton. Motorists are asked to use caution when traveling through the area as Adopt-A-Highway volunteers will be very close to road with no sidewalk access. Volunteers will be visible with orange safety vests and will take every precaution to avoid traffic. For more details and great work the County's volunteer Adopt-A-Highway groups do throughout the year, read their newsletter at Beaufortcountysc.gov/ Recently, Beaufort County announced it is now offering food waste drop-off for residents at several County Convenience Centers through a composting pilot program. This is an exciting milestone in efforts to reduce waste, divert organic material from the landfill, and create valuable compost for our community. This is an important step toward a more sustainable future. Several webinars are being offered to educate people about the new food waste program: the benefits, what items can and cannot be accepted and lots of other useful information. Food waste drop-off is currently available at the following locations: Shanklin Convenience Center, 80 Shanklin Rd., Beaufort (map) Bluffton Convenience Center, 104 Simmonsville Rd. (map) St. Helena Island Convenience Center, 639 Sea Island Parkway (map) Hilton Head Island Convenience Center, 26 Summit Dr. (map) -The USCB men’s and women’s basketball teams are back in action at the Cove in Bluffton this weekend. Both teams will take on in state foe Lander University Saturday, January 31st. The Women’s team tips off at 1:30 and the men will take the court following that game. February is the final month of the Sandsharks’ basketball seasons, so make sure to get out to the Cove and support the hometown sqauds. You can also stream their games through the Peach Belt Conference Network. As we wind down basketball season, the USCB baseball and softball teams will begin their seasons in the next few days. The Softball team gets things going today in Reidville South Carolina in the Valkyrie Classic. At two the Lady Sandsharks will take on the host Converse University, and then at for the Sharks are back on the diamond to take on King University, who traveled to the Palmetto State from Bristol Tennessee. The baseball team was set to begin it’s 2026 season this weekend at home with a three game tilt against Davis and Elkins College, but that series has been cancelled. You can see the USCB baseball in action Tuesday at 3:00 in Hardeeville as they host the Edward Waters Tigers from Jacksonville, Florida. For more information head to USCB Athletics dot com. -The 30th Annual Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration will kickoff this Sunday, February 1st and run through February 28th. The Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association has hosted the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration since 1996, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Gullah people and their history on Hilton Head Island. The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Restaurant Week starts this weekend and runs through February 7th. From Bluffton to Hilton Head Island, more than 80 local restaurants are serving up special pre-fixed menu featuring new creations, signature favorites, and can’t-miss dishes from the area’s top chefs. A Kickoff event at Rollers Wine & Spirits will run next Thursday, January 29th from 5 to 8pm.
