Ten million women in the United States lack health insurance — and many more are underinsured, with out-of-pocket costs so high that health care is still unaffordable. It’s a big reason why women in the U.S. die younger than women in other high-income countries, and why they’re more likely to live with chronic conditions and die during childbirth and pregnancy. And the situation is even more dire for Black women.
