The event took place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada and was broadcast live on pay-per-view in the United States and Canada. The card centered on a UFC Middleweight Championship defense by Rich Franklin against the highly touted Anderson Silva. Franklin was starting to look like a potential longterm champion by the time he and Silva stepped in the cage at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Oct. 14, 2006 for the main event of UFC 64. Silva was known by hardcore fans, but not so much by the casuals: Even with the UFC’s business on fire in the company’s breakthrough year of 2006, UFC 64 drew fewer than 9,000 paid fans in Las Vegas. But Silva knew something the masses didn’t quite understand yet about his skill set. And he wasted little time putting those skills to work. Silva defeated Franklin by TKO (strikes) at 2:59 in the first round. Silva hit Franklin with knees to the body from the Muay Thai-clinch, then badly broke Franklin's nose with a knee to the face. Unable to strike back, Franklin dodged the last of Silva's strikes before falling to the ground, where referee "Big" John McCarthy ended the fight. Silva was crowned the new UFC Middleweight Champion, becoming the second man to defeat Franklin, after Black House-teammate Lyoto Machida. This fight earned him a Knockout of the Night award. This was also awarded the 2006 Knockout of the Year. Silva's victory over Franklin launched one of the most dominant reigns in UFC championship history.
