Building habitats on the moon is not like building them on Earth. As we design shelters to contend with extreme temperature swings, micrometeoroids and galactic cosmic rays, many of our contemporary manufacturing and construction paradigms do not directly translate to the lunar surface. In this visionary talk, MIT roboticist Annika Thomas unveils a path to permanent habitation on the lunar surface, drawing on advanced perception techniques for assembly and monitoring. Inspired by millennia of research and development in unreinforced structural systems on Earth, Thomas shares how moon bricks may be the key to autonomous sustainable development on the moon. AI, Architecture, Engineering, Robots, Space, Vision Annika Thomas is a PhD candidate at MIT’s Aerospace Controls Laboratory, specializing in robotic perception. She aspires to design, integrate, and optimize autonomous robotic systems while contributing to a more inclusive culture of women in STEM. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
