Let’s get You “Unlocked” and Unstuck and positioned for success today! In this video, Coach Gwen, your GPS for personal development and spiritual awareness (0:51), shares the first episode of her journey to understanding narcissism and family secrets. She explains that to truly grasp narcissism, one must look back at their past experiences (1:44). Here are the key points from the video: • Early Life and Family Dynamics (3:24-6:00): Gwen grew up in Buffalo, New York, as the youngest of four children. She describes a generally decent childhood, though she had a strained relationship with one brother who picked on her without reprimand. Her other brother and sister were closer to her. Her parents worked, and there was no alcoholism in the home. By high school, her older siblings had moved out, leaving her essentially an only child at home. • High School Years and Parental Divorce (6:00-11:02): Gwen emphasizes that every detail of her life ties into her discovery of narcissism. In high school, she was happy, active, and academically strong, participating in drill team, cheerleading, softball, and bowling. She describes having a "silver spoon" upbringing with nice clothes and even a car, leading to envy from others, particularly one brother, who saw her as their father's favorite (7:41). Around the time of her high school graduation, her parents divorced (9:14). Her mother, who was strict and at times "mean-spirited" (11:05) towards Gwen, decided to leave and rebuild her life (10:25). • Life After Mother's Departure and Uncomfortable Feelings (15:09-19:28): Gwen chose to stay with her father due to the newfound freedom from her mother's strictness. Her older sister moved back in, and they became very close, enjoying a period of increased freedom, including experimenting with weed and alcohol (17:08). However, Gwen started feeling uncomfortable around her father, describing a change in energy where he made demands she was not comfortable with, like making his bed after his girlfriend had slept in it (18:31). • Seeking an Exit (19:28-22:50): To avoid being alone with her father, Gwen would hide in the closet until he left or went to sleep, then sneak out to stay with her boyfriend. She felt unsafe at home and desperately needed an escape (20:50). This desire for an out led her to marry a high school friend who had joined the army, even though she had initially failed the ASVAB test (21:02-22:12). • Joining the Army and Rapping Career (22:12-28:20): Gwen shipped off to Germany with her husband and joined the army as an "exit plan" to escape her toxic family environment (22:20-22:48). She describes not visiting home for four years, highlighting the severity of the situation. In Germany, she became bored and started writing poems, which evolved into rapping (23:46). Influenced by artists like MC Lyte and Janet Jackson (24:19), she became known as "Brown Sugar" and gained a local following. Upon returning stateside and while in the army, her co-workers encouraged her to enter a rap contest, which she won (26:00-27:16). The prize was an opening act for 95 South at the Savannah Civic Center (27:17). • Lack of Support and Life Change (27:26-29:50): As a new single mother in the army with no support, she could not perform the opening act. Calling home yielded "zero support" (28:17). This experience led her to turn to God, seeking a different path as she felt she couldn't continue alone (28:30-28:52). She changed her life and concludes episode one by inviting viewers to stay tuned for part two.
