The Greater Sydney Area HEMS is a global leader in prehospital and retrieval medicine. Since inception they have been at the forefront innovating, embracing and adapting new technologies. Professor Brian Burns is one of the GSA-HEMS consultants and their Research Co-Lead. AT TBS25 he spoke about how they implemented ECPR (extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation) in their prehospital setting. He emphasised the following key points: • Early Implementation: Initiating ECPR within 60 minutes of cardiac arrest is crucial for improving patient outcomes. • Team Coordination: Effective ECPR requires well-coordinated teams with clearly defined roles, including personnel dedicated to ongoing resuscitation efforts and others focused on ECPR initiation. • Resource Allocation: The success of a prehospital ECPR program depends on tailoring the approach to local resources and capabilities, ensuring that the necessary equipment and trained personnel are available when needed. Dr. Burns also highlights the challenges and considerations in establishing prehospital ECPR programs, such as patient selection criteria, logistical hurdles, and the need for specialised training.
