In this video we are in the city of New Plymouth to climb up Paritutu Rock located within the city along the coast. Paritutu Rock and the Sugar Loaf Islands just off shore are the last exposed surface rocks from the ancient volcano that was active here nearly 2 million years ago. Today the tallest feature of this ancient volcano is Paritutu Rock at 156m (512ft) in height. The trail to the top takes only about 15-20 minutes, but about 2/3rds of it is sometimes near vertical and you need some good fitness to be able to pull yourself up with the provided chain and lower yourself back down. Well worth it, if you can safely make the climb. Unfortunately on my visit the weather was unsettled over the younger volcanic peaks to the west and south, so I was unable to see the active Mt Taranaki volcano and other peaks. I was unable to find my GoPro head mount when packing for this work trip so had to use my chest mount during the steep chain assisted section of the climb which is why you are unfortunately starring at rocks some of the way up. Someday when I get back to New Plymouth I will film it again it with the head mounted GoPro. Thanks for watching!
