Dit verklaart het nog altijd vrij hoge aantal verkeersslachtoffers in ons land ten opzichte van de andere Europese landen. De cijfers voor overdreven snelheid: In 2012 deden zich in België 44.193 ongevallen met lichamelijke letsels voor. Verschillende onderzoeken tonen aan dat overdreven of onaangepaste snelheid de hoofdoorzaak is bij ongeveer één ongeval op de drie. Dat betekent dus dat ongeveer 15.000 ongevallen per jaar (meer dan 40 per dag) te wijten zijn aan ‘overhaaste’ bestuurders. Hoe sneller een bestuurder rijdt, hoe minder tijd hij/zij heeft om te stoppen en een ongeval te voorkomen. Bij 30 km/u bedraagt de remafstand 13 meter, maar bij 50 km/u heeft een voertuig al 26 meter nodig om volledig tot stilstand te komen. Een automobilist die van Brussel naar Luik rijdt en systematisch 20 km/u sneller gaat dan toegelaten, wint daardoor amper 7 minuten! Wegens het drukke verkeer en het grote aantal kruispunten is de tijdwinst binnen de bebouwde kom nihil. Trager rijden kost minder. Wie 10 km/u trager rijdt, bespaart 3 tot 5 liter brandstof op 500 km.
