HELMUT NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHS GO ON DISPLAY IN PARIS The first retrospective of photographer Helmut Newton since his death in 2004 is opening in Paris on Saturday (24 MAR. 2012). More than 200 photographs will be on display at Paris Le Grand Palais including some of his famous black and white "big nudes." Jerome Neutres collaborated with Sir Newton's widow to put on the show. He explained how ahead of his time photographer Newton was: "The woman in Helmut Newton's work is a powerful woman, is the master of the world. This is a world without men, like one of the book(s) by Helmut Newton is untitled. He is very much an avant-garde because in this time, it is the beginning of all the fight for the women to be considered as powerful as the men." Neutres compared the photographer's work to the paintings of the Great Masters: "When people think of Helmut Newton in terms of a photographer of naked women, they are right, but he is a photographer of naked women as Velazquez was a painter of the naked Venus, as Manet was the painter of L'Olympia." Sylvia Gobbel was only 19 years old when she became Helmut Newton's muse and started posing nude for him. She recalled how comfortable the photographer made her feel: "Just very impressive. He knew what he wanted, he put you in position and just told you what to do and he told you every two seconds 'Beautiful, don't move!'. So I just felt great." Now 50 years old, Gobbel also told Associated Press that when she posted some of Newton's photos of her on her Facebook page, they were immediately censored. She now only uploads blurry versions as it seems that thirty years after those photos were taken, they still generate controversyat least on Facebook.
