30 pieces of gear which I think are essential to go backpacking. You don't need more than this! Of course bring more if you want and it will make you happy, but for safety and comfort this is what you need as a baseline. Even if you are hiking a 2,200 mile Trail like the Appalachian Trail, this is it. If you are just getting started, remember... you probably own a lot of this! And don't need to buy much new. In the end there are roughly 30 pieces of gear which I personally think are essential to go backpacking safely and happily. Obviously in some environments you could need even less than this! But I wanted to present a well rounded kit, that I would personally use on any trail in the United States during any time of year. I think a big saver for new backpackers is in clothing, as chances are you already own all the clothing you could ever need for backpacking, instead of spending a thousand dollars! Other places would be in the med kit, which you already own. Repair tools, water bottles, and various bags like ziplocs. I don't want the barrier to entry into backpacking to be high and don't feel it has to be. Even the gear here which you may need to buy, you could get used! Or you can buy budget alternatives, like using a froggtoggs rain jacket. 00:00 - Essential Gear for Backpacking 00:33 - Packing 02:25 - Sleeping 05:16 - Clothing 09:55 - Cooking & Water 12:30 - Electronics 14:20 - Misc. 16:50 - Bring what you want!
