Pupils waving to Mandela leaving in his car STORYLINE: Former South African President Nelson Mandela, Africa's much-honoured statesman, celebrated his 83rd birthday and three years of marriage to Graca Machel on Wednesday. Mandela and his Graca danced together as a group of pupils from the Norwood Primary School, accompanied by a saxophonist and a trumpeter, performed a birthday song for him. Mandela was looking forward to a private lunch with his wife, the former Mozambican first lady, at his home in a plush suburb of Johannesburg, he said on Tuesday. No official events were planned on the former president's birthday, aides said. Other aides said it was the only day all year when Mandela's diary was empty and he could rest. Since his retirement in 1999, Mandela has kept a hectic schedule both locally and internationally. He publicises the plight of the poor, helps fight HIV/AIDS in a country struggling with one of the highest infection rates in the world, and raises funds to build schools and clinics in South Africa's impoverished rural heartland.
