Staying in the colorful island-town of Flores, I set out to explore this vast archaeological site tucked deep in the Petén jungle. Walking through Yaxhá’s monumental plazas, temples, and jungle-covered causeways, I captured sweeping footage of a city that once held tens of thousands of people but now sits in peaceful silence. High above the ruins, wild howler monkeys echoed through the treetops with their deep, otherworldly calls — a sound that feels ancient, like a voice from Maya time itself. As the day came to an end, I witnessed one of the most glorious warm sunsets over Lake Yaxhá. Golden light washed over the water, the forest canopy glowed, and the entire ancient city seemed to exhale with the last breath of daylight.
