I set out on a jet ski with Tatjana from Port Nikau, Whangārei, gliding over glassy water under a hot summer sun. The conditions were perfect—calm seas, light breeze, and crystal-clear water that shimmered in shades of blue and green. The ride out toward Ocean Beach was exhilarating, with the coastline unfolding in rugged cliffs and sandy bays. Cruising past Smugglers Cove and around Guano Island, the clarity of the water revealed an incredible sight below: a huge school of blue maomao moving together in the shallows, their flashes of blue dancing beneath the surface. It was one of those moments that makes you slow down and just take it all in. With the sun high, the water warm, and visibility at its best, it was the kind of perfect summer’s day that reminds you why Northland is so special—fast rides, stunning scenery, and unforgettable encounters with marine life.
