Centuries-old European beech forests, which have survived almost unchanged to this day, are located within the boundaries of the Paklenica National Park at the sites of Suva draga-Klimenta and Oglavinovac-Javornik. With the development of civilization and the cultivation of forest areas, significant forest areas have disappeared throughout Europe, including beech forests. It is estimated that beech forests, before human intervention in Europe, occupied 91,000,000 hectares. Today, the original beech forests cover an area of ​​only 90,000 hectares. The only examples of native beech forests that can still be explored due to their preservation are limited to relatively small areas, so there is a need to unite then across Europe under one natural asset and one goal, which is to take care of them together. UNESCO's World Heritage Serial Property "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe" is currently the largest serial property of UNESCO World Heritage. With 94 sites in 18 countries, it is the only World Heritage site that connects so many components. Beech forests of the Paklenica National Park represent an exceptionally preserved, undisturbed forest ecosystem to which long-term protection has ensured originality and integrity. They are a valuable part of Europe's original beech forests and are an important refuge for many species, some of which are globally endangered. The future survival of beech forests lies in educating and caring for this World Heritage Site in order to continue to diligently maintain the diversity of forest ecosystems and provide a unique heritage of the power of nature to future generations.
