The directorial debut from Frank LaLoggia, this low-budget (but entertaining) American horror film stars Fred Armstrong, Kathleen Rowe McAllen (best known for appearing in stage musicals and soap operas), Pam Morris, Paul Haber, Canadian actor and musician Stefan Arngrim (best remembered for his role on the television series Land of the Giants, 1968-1970), Elizabeth Hoffman (1926-2023), Frank Birney (1937-2021), John Holland (1908-1993), and Richard Jay Silverthorn (1952-1987) as Lucifer. Taking inspiration from the likes of 'Carrie and 'The Omen (both from 1976), the film tells the story of Andrew (Stefan Arngrim), a teenage boy who does well in school but is so bullied and introverted that he hardly speaks. It turns out that Andrew is actually Lucifer reincarnated, which he doesn't know, yet. However, his behaviour grows more alarming as he becomes aware of his identity, and as the evil wells up within him, people start dying. Opposing him are two archangels occupying the bodies of fellow student Julie (Kathleen Rowe McAllen), and neighbour Margaret (Elizabeth Hoffman). Embracing the fact when he learns he is the Antichrist, Andrew conducts a ceremony on his eighteenth birthday and begins to wage an unholy war upon those who have abused him. Despite its many flaws, 'Fear No Evil is an interesting oddity among the numerous teen horror/thriller films that were being released in the early 1980's. LaLoggia went on to make the highly impressive ghost story 'Lady in White (1988) and the psycho-thriller 'Mother (1995). Since then, however, he has faded into obscurity. The soundtrack featured a bunch of punk and New-wave bands from the period (B-52's, Boomtown Rats, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, The Ramones, etc.), whilst LaLoggia himself serves up an orchestral underscore (co-written by David Spear) which mixes electronic music with somber gothic melodies and tender lyricism accentuating the torn feelings of its key 'otherworldly' players. American film composer David Spear began his career orchestrating film scores for the great Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004) including 'Animal House (1978), 'Airplane! (1980), 'Heavy Metal (1981), and 'Ghostbusters (1984). Spear's more notable film scores include 'Exterminator 2 (1984), 'Dinosaurs (1993), 'The Creature Wasn't Nice (2007), and the television film 'The Ratings Game (1984).
