(2 Nov 2014) About 200 gay activists marched peacefully through the capital of Montenegro on Sunday, protected by hundreds of riot police. No incidents were reported, unlike in previous years when police fought right-wing extremists and gay activists had to be evacuated. A small number of people were detained by police on suspicion of potential trouble-making. The pride parade organiser celebrated the peaceful nature of Sunday's rally, saying he hoped even more activists would join in next year's event. Montenegro, like much of the Balkans, has a strong macho male culture with little tolerance for gays, who often face harassment or attacks. But Balkan countries must protect human rights to advance in European Union membership bids. The head of the EU mission in Montenegro praised the government for securing the event.
