Lochlin presents findings from his graduate program dedicated to understanding how remotely sensed imagery can be used to estimate wheat stem sawfly infestation in wheat. The presentation will focus on a recently published laboratory experiment supplemented with preliminary results from field studies using publicly available satellite imagery. Lochlin Ermatinger is a graduate student at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, studying how remotely sensed data can be used to map infestations of wheat stem sawfly in wheat fields. He started working in David Weaver’s wheat stem sawfly lab as an undergraduate dissecting thousands of stem samples. A graduate program has offered him the chance to incorporate his knowledge of geospatial technologies and remote sensing with on the ground surveys to investigate possible avenues of mapping wheat stem sawfly infestation.
