Seeding the Lead is a leadership coaching and development company based in Edmonton, Alberta, focused on helping managers, executives, and emerging leaders build stronger teams and healthier workplace cultures. Founded by Adam Melnyk, Seeding the Lead works with individuals and organizations that want to move beyond surface-level management and into intentional, people-first leadership. Adam brings real-world experience, practical frameworks, and direct coaching to leaders who want clarity, confidence, and impact in how they lead. In Today's Video... Adam Melnyk breaks down three essential leadership skills required to level up from being a manager to becoming a true leader: listening, communication, and courage. 1. Listening Adam challenges a common assumption: most people believe they are great listeners, but in reality, they are not. Many managers listen from a self-focused “I” perspective—thinking about their response, their opinion, or what they want to happen next. While this mindset may help someone climb the ranks, it must change to lead effectively. Leadership-level listening requires shifting the focus entirely to the other person—why they are sharing, how they feel, and what they need from the conversation. Strong listening helps leaders uncover real problems, understand what’s happening inside the organization, and make people feel genuinely heard and valued. This is a long-term skill that takes years to truly master. 2. Communication Communication is more than delivering instructions. Managers often become frustrated when employees don’t follow direction, but the issue is rarely effort—it’s clarity. Adam emphasizes a simple rule: if the other person doesn’t understand what you said, the communication failed. Many managers communicate in a way they understand instead of speaking in the language their team understands. Adam shares an example of leaders using executive or analytical language with nurses—only to lose engagement. When leaders adapt their message to what their team values, such as empathy, people, and real-world impact, communication becomes effective and actionable. 3. Courage The final skill is courage—the willingness to step into the unknown. Humans are naturally risk-averse, and many managers prefer to play it safe. But leadership requires discomfort. Growth only happens when leaders are willing to take risks, try new approaches, and accept failure as part of learning. Adam explains that courage is built by repeatedly stepping into uncomfortable situations. Each experience builds wisdom, resilience, and confidence. Leaders who avoid risk remain stuck; leaders who embrace it grow.
