On January 9th, the Lakeland Police Department boarded up a house at 1220 Wright Drive and posted signage stating the house was closed as a public nuisance. Two homicides have occurred within blocks of this house during the last year. This is the second house LPD has closed in two months. The Lakeland Police Department continues to work towards improving personal safety for residence and landlords by keeping drugs and other illegal activity off their property. After receiving numerous narcotic complaints on a drug hotline, an investigation was conducted by the Special Investigations Section in the sale of "controlled substances" at 1220 Wright Drive. During the investigation, crack cocaine and marijuana was purchased from the house. In addition, during a search warrant, more controlled substances (over 100 pills), 95 pills of MDMA (commonly referred to as "ectasy", two loaded firearms and supplies for cooking, weighing and packaging cocaine was found. The City of Lakeland's Nuisance Abatement Board findings were: 1. The property has a reputation as a location where controlled substances are illegally possessed and can be illegally purchased. 2. Despite the landlord's warnings to the renters, the property is still intertwined with the illegal possession of controlled substance. 3. The property constitutes a public nuisance.
