Grisaille - No. 3 from Les Jours pluvieux (Rainy Days) (1894) by Marie Jaëll Known as a pianist, composer and educator, Marie Jaëll (1846-1925) was widely respected amongst the best musicians in France, and was the first to perform every one of Beethoven's sonatas in Paris. 'Grisaille' is a painting technique using only shades of grey, and sometimes intended to create the illusion of sculpture. In France, it also developed to mean any kind of painting technique in which translucent (allowing light to pass through) oil paints were placed over a painting underneath which was only monotone. These ideas can be seen in Jaëll's piece, where the melody in the right hand from bar 12 'seeps through' the accompaniment, occasionally rising above the pitch level of the accompaniment, and then descending to blend back in with the continuous quavers which the right hand also plays.
