Assisi, a stunning, pink-stoned medieval hill town in Umbria, Italy, is renowned as the birthplace of St. Francis. Offering a profound blend of art, nature, and spirituality, it features the magnificent Basilica of St. Francis, winding, steep pedestrian lanes, and panoramic views over the lush Umbrian valley. We arrived in Assisi and visited the beautiful 13th century Basilica of St. Francis which houses St. Francis' grave in the lower section. Assisi is linked in legend with it's native son, St. Francis Assisi an is the site of many a pilgrimage The gentle saint founded the Franciscan order and shares honors with St. Catherine of Siena as the patron saint of Italy. He is remembered by many, even non Christians, as a lover of nature. His preaching about birds is one of the legends of his life. We went along the coastline of the Adriatic Sea to Ravenna. Ravenna, located in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, is a captivating city renowned as the "City of Mosaics," housing eight UNESCO World Heritage sites that showcase 1,500-year-old Byzantine art. Once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and later the Byzantine seat in Italy, it offers a peaceful, walk-able alternative to Florence or Venice. We saw the famous mosaics in the 6th century Basilica of St. Apollinaris in Classe. Music: Southern Horizon by John Rudzinskas.
