Lost Teenagers is a play by students of Callerton Academy. It follows the journey of five teenagers who find themselves sucked into a parallel world on midsummer’s night. Initially captivated by the 'Happy High Life', and its promise of polish and perfection, they soon uncover a darker reality lying beyond the screen. The five teenagers, each with their own challenges in the real world, are initially strangers. As they battle their way through video game levels to get back to reality, they soon become bonded by friendship. By the end they recognise the pitfalls of believing in the illusion of the Happy High Life. Lost Teenagers came out of Young Writers’ City in Callerton Academy, Newcastle upon Tyne, a New Writing North programme where writers, musicians and performers lead creative projects in schools. During a conversation in one of these workshops’ students shared their experiences which included bullying and the pressure to maintain an online presence. Expertly guided by writers and artists Emily Wiseman, Kema Kay, Liz Corney and Marshal Siziba, these conversations led to the creation of Lost Teenagers. Performed at Northern Stage in April 2025, we talked to the students, producers and artists they worked with to find out more about the performance and what it means to be part of Young Writers’ City programme. This programme would not be possible without the continued commitment of our funders and partners Kavli Trust, Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund, Music Partnership North, Amazon Literary Partnership, and the Gosforth Group Academy Trust.
