The same dance used by the original boogaloo dancers from Oakland in Black Panther protests is today being used as a mask to cover the history and oppression in which hip hop culture took shape. The mask means a lot of things, "wokeness," "allyship," "cultural appreciation"... but what it really is is a grossly inaccurate reproduction, put together by decontextualized movements dislocated from its roots and function. In this piece, we are returning to the vocabularies of hip hop, engaging in languages like that of the cypher, of peace and love, which give power to our movements, and paying tribute to those who came before us, and those who are doing the work now to uplift the culture.
