Science fiction as a filmmaking genre has been with us literally since day one. One of the first actual "narrative" films was Georges Méliès' 1902 "A Trip to the Moon," and the stories have only gotten more fanciful since then. So we're talking about over 120 years of film history here, with technological advances making it harder and harder to ascertain where the science part ends and the fiction part begins. That's a whole lot of movies right there. How many, though, can you actually recognize? This video consists of 42 still images from a sci-fi film - how many can be identified based on that single, solitary image? That's where you come in. You'll have about seven seconds per frame to get them. Now, a few caveats - I do skew towards more recent films. That's not intended to be a indictment on the quality of some of those earlier films, but you'd have to be related to the directors of some of these movies to even come close to identifying them. Sci-fi films of the 30s and 40s were treated with a lot of the same disrespect that horror was getting, which is a bit of a shame because those films were laying down genre-defining rules that are still obeyed. Okay, maybe the entire premise of some of these films are ridiculous - it doesn't mean they should be forgotten entirely. Also, many of them were done as serials instead of traditional movies, so they are a little trickier to classify. Comic book movies. Oh boy, this is a tricky one. I'm going to allow them when I feel that the science-fiction aspects are particularly relevant. So Superman is an alien - he's in. But Batman is a creepy rich dude with issues - he's out. Genre-splitters - is Alien a science fiction movie, or is it a horror movie? The answer is yes. I would include it in either discussion, so it's in. Same with sci-fi comedies and science-fantasy.. They're still grounded in the basic premise of the genre. And yeah, bruh - that includes GREMLINS. If you don't agree with some of the included titles, I get it. Feel free to gripe about it in the comments. I'm not going to argue with you - this is purely an opinion thing. Just play nice and don't be rude. So, let's get into it!
