8210, 8111 & 8159 pass through Parkes NSW with the empty ore train to Goonumbla NSW as BRM001, 602 & 4420 idle away in the background amid a SSR locomotive reshuffle. Consist of the ore train is 27 RRLX forty-foot wagons with two 20-foot ore pods on each platform. The 81 class are EMD model JT26C-2SS and 84 were built between 1982 and 1991, all of the class are now in the Pacific National livery. Powered by a V16 (V-formation) 16-cylinder two stroke turbo charged EMD 16-645E3B prime mover delivering 3,000hp. All were built at Kelso NSW by Clyde Engineering, published track speed is 115KMh. The 81 class are close relatives of the Victorian "G" class and South Australian "BL" class which are also JT26C-2SS model, externally however, there is little resemblance. The 81 class are very popular with crews and have a solid reputation as a reliable and comfortable locomotive. 8141 was delivered new on the 24th of May 1984. All of the 81 class are still in service except for 8147 which was written off and scrapped after the Back Creek NSW level crossing accident on the 10th of March 2007. The train collided with a semi-trailer loaded with hay and burst into flames, 48106 and 48155 were also in the consist and burnt out. The 48 class were also written off and scrapped. 8111 was handed over new on the 08th of April 1983 and 8159 on the 14th of February 1985. Locomotive 8210 was delivered new on the 14th of June 1994, as part of an order placed with Clyde Engineering at Braemar NSW for 58 units in total. The 82 class were originally to have been the "94" class and 8201 was actually finished as "9401" before being changed to "8201" before the official handover ceremony at Braemar NSW. The 82 class are EMD model JT42C and are powered by a V12 two stroke turbo charged EMD 710G3A prime mover delivering 3,030hp. Published track speed is 121KMH. They were nick named "Jitterbugs" when first delivered due to an excessive cab wobble when the loco was at idle, this was rectified by the builder to a certain extent. Also in their early months they were renown for throwing the odd piston through the block which was tracked down to a weight distribution issue, other than that they have led a relatively trouble-free life. They are also unique in that they only have one brake shoe per wheel rather than the usual two. Morris Knudsen also introduced this when the "CL" class were converted to the "CLP" and "CLF" class in 1993. All of the class remain in current service except for 8219, 8246 & 8247 which were scrapped after the Beresfield NSW accident on 23rd of October 1997. 8221 was also scrapped after catching fire on a loaded coal train on the 05th of June 2014 at Awaba NSW, it was put aside until it was decided to scrap the locomotive on the 29th of November 2016. 0940hrs on Tuesday 18th of March 2025.
