The Château de Saumur is a castle located 10 km from the Château de Montsoreau at the confluence of the Thouet River with the Loire, in the city of the same name, an ancient Carolingian center. It is part of the Châteaux of the Loire, classified as a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO in 2000. Originally, on the hill overlooking the river, a watchtower probably arose to protect against the invasions of the Vikings who threatened to penetrate the Loire Valley. Around 956, a monastery was built (Saint-Florent du Château), founded by Theobald, Count of Blois. A decade later, the lords of Saumur added a fortified residence, which was surrounded, along with the monastery, by a defensive wall with two access gates.
