Florence Price was the first African-American female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra when the Chicago Symphony performed her Symphony in E Minor in 1933. Trained at the New England Conservatory, Florence Price was exposed to many different styles of music including both classical and vernacular styles. Whenever I teach Florence Price, I like to show students her unique way of “code-switching” from one style to another. Code-switching is the ability to switch communication styles to fit different social situations or contexts. The skill of code-switching is often used by African-Americans and other minorities to navigate various cultural environments in order to be accepted. In "Fantasie Negre No. 1," Price uses source material from the spiritual, “Sinner, Please Don’t Let This Harvest Pass" and transforms it, fluently communicating in the compositional language of Romantic composers like Chopin, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff.
