Composer: Willem (Frederik Willem Johannes) Pijper (8 September 1894 -- 18 March 1947) Performers: Eleonore Pameijer (flute), Frans van Ruth (piano) Year of recording: between 2001-2002 Sonata for flute and piano {Sonata Flauto e Pianoforte}, written in 1925. 00:00 - I. Allegro 03:48 - II. Lento 08:10 - III. Presto Pijper's Sonata for Flute and Piano achieves a striking balance between the intruments; musical ideas are beautifully expressed. Rhythmically and melodically the flute and piano go their own ways to form a dual unity of musical ideas. The opening chord in the piano is the nucleus from whihch the whole work evolves, and the flute theme develops immediately from this chord (Pijper's germ-cell technique). The first Allegro movement consists of 3 parts with a flute cadenza serving as transition before a short repetition of the opening part. The second Lento movement is the most important movement, is tranquil and poetic in 2 parts, and features insistent bass patterns. The Presto third movement features colorful polymetric and polytonal combinations, and brings the whole work to a brilliant conclusion.
