Earth at perihelion (closest point from the sun) in January when the Northern Hemisphere experience winter season. Earth is at Aphelion (furthest point from the sun) in July, the northern hemisphere enjoys its summer season. Variation of the distance of the sun from the earth is not a factor that determines the season. The real reason for seasonal changes of the earth is due to the tilt of the earth. Plane of Ecliptic - The plane on which the earth orbits around the sun. Equinoctial - The great circle on the celestial sphere midway between the celestial poles projected into space. Declination - The angle measured northwards or southwards from the equinoctial to a line joining the centre of the earth to a body in space. Solstice – Standing Sun. Equinox – Equal Night.
