Editor’s note: We have removed a portion of this video in which the reporter incorrectly classifies firearms included in the gun buyback program as restricted instead of prohibited. The gun buyback program has seen a shortfall since its implementation in 2020, following the Nova Scotia mass-shooting that spurred the banning of over 2500 different firearms. Canadian gun owners had until March 31, 2026 to receive cash for turning in their recently banned assault-style firearms. Around 50,000 have been declared, however that number pales in comparison to Ottawa’s estimate of around 136,000 that were expected. Quebec MP and École Polytechnique shooting survivor Nathalie Provost blamed the conservatives for the low uptake, “people would have liked to register are not because they are confused.” She said. As Global's Touria Izri reports, legal gun owners say they’re being unfairly targeted.
