Pampering of the bride On the day before her wedding day, the bride-to-be gets massages, facials and all other kinds of pampering from her family. It is a day that the bride-to-be should feel good and free from stress. Brighter dress for bridesmaids Unlike the western culture where bridesmaids wear the same color for their dresses, Brazil considers this custom as bad luck. Instead, Brazilian bridesmaids go for brighter and more vibrant colors for their outfit. Writing names in the hem The bride also remembers her single friends on her wedding day and writes their names inside the hem of her wedding dress. This custom is believed to bring good luck to the bride’s single friends in finding their own love life. Wearing shoes of gold Brazilian brides prefer wearing fluid and minimalist dresses. Underneath her white wedding dress, the bride wears a pair of gold shoes as a custom. Gold heel dancing On the dance floor, the bride takes her gold shoes off and puts them on the center. While dancing, the guests would drop money into the shoes’ sole to wish the newlyweds a prosperous married life. How to tame a donkey The groom is tested on the worthiness of his love and affection to the bride by taming a donkey. If in the end he is successful, the bride’s family entrust him that he’d be responsible in taking care of his future wife. Church wedding ceremony Brazilians still prefer to have their wedding ceremony in a church since majority are Catholics. The ceremony usually takes an hour or longer as it includes certain activities such as readings, poems, signing of legal documents, and other dedications. Tie auction On the wedding ceremonial night, the groom’s tie is cut up in several pieces. Then the best man starts to auction off each piece to the wedding guests. The purpose is to increase funds that the couple can use for their honeymoon. Women as officiants Traditionally, wedding ceremonies in Brazil are led by male priests or ministers. This sweet symbolizes prosperity and good luck for the newlyweds. Caipirinha When going to a wedding party in Brazil, never miss the Caipirinha, which is the national cocktail of Brazil.
