The Cellular and Supramolecular Structure and Function Section of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), a part of the NIH, focuses on studying cellular structures with the help of a variety of instruments, all based on electron microscopy and focused electron probes. By looking at entire cells in three dimensions the research team has uncovered new functions and structures that have previously been unknown. The section has recently focused on research into pancreatic islet, erythropoiesis and platelets, revealing new details of the cell structures impossible to detect in traditional sections.
