“Algum Wood for a New Year: Rare Resources Used for Worship” Key Texts: 1 Kings 10:11–12 2 Chronicles 2:8 2 Chronicles 9:10–11 BIG IDEA (CLEAR & CONTROLLING) God brings rare, costly resources into our lives; the question for the New Year is whether we will convert them into worship or waste them on self. INTRODUCTION (HOOK – 2–3 MINUTES) The Bible is filled with details people skip because they seem insignificant. One of those details is a rare wood mentioned only a few times. It is not described botanically — but the use tells the story. Algum wood appears only in connection with Solomon’s temple worship. New Year question: What rare resources has God imported into your life — and how will you use them? I. ALGUM WOOD WAS RARE — NOT COMMON (1 Kings 10:11; 2 Chronicles 9:10) “And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees…” (1 Kgs 10:11) Observations: Algum (almug) wood is: Imported Limited Not native to Israel It required: International partnership Cost Intentional acquisition Principle: God does not only give ordinary blessings — He also gives rare ones. New Year Application: Time Health Opportunity Influence Knowledge Position Rare blessings demand deliberate stewardship. II. ALGUM WOOD WAS CHOSEN — NOT RANDOM (2 Chronicles 2:8) “Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon…” Observations: Solomon specifically requested algum wood. It was selected before construction began. Worship was planned — not improvised. Principle: God’s best is often wasted because people never decide in advance how they will use it. New Year Application: If you do not pre-decide: Your time will be stolen Your money will drift Your talents will default to self-use Worship requires intentional planning. III. ALGUM WOOD WAS USED FOR WORSHIP — NOT DISPLAY (1 Kings 10:12) “And the king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of the LORD, and for the king’s house, harps also and psalteries for singers…” Observations: Algum wood was used for: Pillars (support, structure) Musical instruments (praise, worship) Not mentioned: Furniture Decoration Personal luxury Principle: God’s rare gifts are meant to support worship, not decorate self. New Year Application: Ask: Does my time support worship? Does my home support worship? Does my money support worship? Does my talent support worship? IV. ALGUM WOOD WAS TRANSFORMED — NOT STORED (2 Chronicles 9:11) “And the king made of the algum trees terraces to the house of the LORD…and harps and psalteries…” Observations: Raw wood became refined instruments. Value increased through use. Nothing stayed unused. Principle: Blessings unused for God do not remain neutral — they decay spiritually. New Year Application: Idle blessings become idols. Stored gifts rot. Worship refines what God provides. V. ALGUM WOOD DISAPPEARS AFTER ITS PURPOSE IS MET “There came no such almug trees, nor were seen unto this day.” (1 Kgs 10:12) Observations: Algum wood vanishes from Scripture. It fulfilled its purpose — then exits the record. Principle: God’s gifts are seasonal. If missed, the opportunity may not return. New Year Warning: Don’t assume “next year” Don’t delay obedience Don’t waste rare seasons CONCLUSION (STRONG & DIRECT) God imported rare wood. Solomon converted it into worship. God recorded its faithful use forever. Final New Year Question: What has God brought into your life for worship in 2026 — and will it become a pillar, an instrument, or wasted lumber?
