Ready to take your mobility to the next level? Are you nervous about taking your kids to the park in case they dart out on the road and you can’t catch them? Do you worry about not being able to cross the road fast enough? Are you training for an upcoming walking or running event? Many people with a neurological condition or following brain injury may think their rehabilitation is finished when they can walk independently. But that doesn’t have to be the case! In everyday life, it is often necessary to take a few steps at a pace faster than a walk, such as to get out of the way of a moving vehicle. But how do you measure improvement beyond walking and where do you go from there? The high-level mobility assessment tool or the HiMAT is an outcome measure that assesses high level balance and mobility following brain injury or in other neurological conditions. It consists of 13 items that range from walking forwards to walking backwards to running to bounding and climbing stairs. To be assessed using the HiMAT, you must be able to walk 20 metres independently without a gait aid and with or without orthoses. The reason we assess our clients with the HiMAT is to provide them with concrete measures of improvement and to show us that our treatment is effective and continues to help you work towards your goals. Check out this video to watch one of my client’s perform the HiMAT and learn more about why we use it here at ARC.
