Nicknamed the "Satchmo of Japan" by Louis Armstrong himself, Fumio Nanri (南里 文雄) is a bit of a hidden gem with regard to Japanese jazz. Born in Osaka in 1910, Nanri worked with many talents throughout his decades-long career, in and outside of Japan. The legendary trumpeter recorded this album 'Farewell' in July 1974, before passing away just over a year later in August of 1975, aged 64. 'Farewell' was released posthumously the same year under Kiva, a sub-label of Elec Records. I first came across Nanri through his cover of "Indiana" (James F. Hanley and Ballard MacDonald), which is featured on this album, here on YouTube. It was such a good rendition by Nanri and the rest of the band, instinctively leading me to try and find more of his music. There were a few other videos of individual tracks here and there, but these were limited in number and I couldn't find any full albums either. After discovering that his excellent renditions of "Indiana", "Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" were all a part of 'Farewell', I set out to acquire this heartening album and hear it in full. It appeared to have only been pressed once on vinyl for its release, with no reissues. I managed to nab a copy of Discogs in great condition; obi, insert and all. Must say I do not regret the purchase one bit, and was incredibly pleased by how good an album of this rarity turned out to be. The fact this wasn't available for listening anywhere online was just criminal. I purchased an analogue-to-digital phono stage and got to recording – such an album had to be made available for everyone to hear. Unfortunately there are a few minor clicks/pops here and there throughout the recording, but after some basic noise-reduction in Audacity it's pretty solid on the whole with minimal noise if any. I hope you enjoy the outstanding work of the late Fumio Nanri, farewell.
