If you’re looking to design a successful credentialing program — for your classroom, school, campus, across campuses, online platform, workplace or other learning environment — start with the question “Why badges?” Badgr Director of Digital Credentialing Strategies Sheryl Grant, Ph.D., addresses why asking "Why badges" is key to introducing micro-credentials or digital badges to your learning ecosystem. Learn how to answer this and other questions about designing and implementing an effective badging program when you watch this presentation from InstructureCon 2021. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Grant has researched and written about the design of badging programs since launching Open Badges alongside her colleagues at Mozilla, the MacArthur Foundation and HASTAC 10 years ago – starting with her book, "What Counts as Learning: Open Digital Badges for New Opportunities." Knowing that the more clarity people have about why they issue badges or create pathways, the more impact their credentialing programs are going to have — including whether their learners find value in the credentials designed for them — Dr. Grant leads viewers through credentials examples, explanations and more spanning education and business. She addresses how living in a culture where learners and workers are continuously expected to upskill, reskill and display what many people refer to as 21st-century competencies mean learners need to capture and communicate their skills in a way employers can recognize. Because of this learning culture, she also poses the question, “Why pathways” to successfully manage and visualize the complexities of these continuously interweaving, formal/informal learning pathways. Learners need to picture their pathways, and institutions of learning need to provide roadmaps — and maybe even more importantly, show how incremental skills fit into those paths their learners are traversing. Join Dr. Grant as she talks about Open Badges as digital data containers, or credential transcripts, that make what she calls the ibles and the ables possible — meaning credentials that are visible, clickable, shareable, portable, verifiable, interoperable, extensible and machine readable. Watch to learn about five ways that micro-credentials take on additional value when they’re webified, how to get stakeholders on board and more.
